What is the policy for police presence on campus?

As of Spring 2019, the current North Newton Police Department (NNPD) campus policing policy is as follows:

  • Officers can walk around campus
  • Officers are not to approach or speak to students with the exception of the following circumstances:
    • The officer has a warrant
    • They are responding to a 911 call
    • They are responding to obvious criminal activity
    • They are responding to an individual in distress
    • A student initiated the interaction with police
  • Officers are welcome in buildings but will not enter unless they have received permission from Bethel College on-call staff or student. These spaces include Residence halls and the courtyard of Warkentin Court, any stairways, walkways or corridors of residence halls.

NNPD is the closest police presence to the Bethel College campus. The goal of both NNPD and Bethel College Administration is to keep Bethel College safe and secure for all students. Newton Police Department (NPD) is a separate entity from NNPD, although NPD will occasionally fill in shifts for NNPD if no officers are available.

Please contact Samuel Haynes, Vice President of Student Life and Dean of Students with any questions or concerns regarding the Bethel College-North Newton Police Department agreement.

If you have a negative experience with NNPD or NPD, please contact Vice President Haynes or Julian Gonzalez-Salamanca, director of Diversity and Inclusion.
